The Idea of Individuality
Ever wondered what individuality is? It is a particular character that distinguishes one person from the other. So how many of us actually know what we are ?
Most of us tend to jump on the bandwagon popularly known as “bhed chaal” in Hindi. Sometimes it is totally unintentional. Taking examples from my childhood, I slowly developed tastes what my sister had. I listened to English songs without even understanding it because it seemed to be so COOL.
I wanted to show off people that see, I listen to English songs and I am as cool as everyone is. And this is where I totally went wrong. I chose over my sister’s tastes over mine. It is true that today I do love listening to English songs, but it’s just what I did out of the so called trends!
Some people intentionally do things which they feel that its what others do and is the best. Following a dress trend even if it looks bad on you is a common example people do all the time. Choosing Computer Science and Information Technology because it gets us better opportunities as compared to other branches of Engineering. LOL . This is just what people believe blindly. Everyone has equal opportunities in all the fields and this is just a myth.
We usually start believing things which slowly kills our own individuality. We get influenced by our peers tend to think in the same way, good or bad. Sometimes it does help us shaping a good personality but sometimes it makes it worse. Personality just not means what’s there on the out. It’s what you really are from within.
I’d just ask you people to question yourselves that is this what you wanted to do? Are you happy with what you’re doing in your life or thinking about anything just because it seems “cool”?
Most people are driven by the thought of “Log kya kahenge“. You should be proud of your personal thoughts and views about things if they’re right of course. It was rightly said by Ralph Waldo Emerson, “To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.”
So what does this exactly mean?
Don’t let the people around you change your mindset, your notion about things. Don’t let them change who you really are. Stand out and shine bright. Create your own identity. As adults we need to understand the fact that we can’t live our whole lives sticking on to people’s speculation about things. This will imprison us in our own thoughts and later in life we’ll be filled with regret.
At some point of life you might feel alone because of your individuality, but remember, no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself.
Here’s a quote by Bernard M. Baruch,
“Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don’t matter, and those who matter don’t mind.”
